Snoring & Sleep Apnoea

restme® is a patented mattress and pillow, developed and tested during a PhD-thesis at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. Most mammals have normal breathing during sleep while many human beings suffer from sleep disruption principally due to the sleep position. Most mammals sleep on the side (lateral) or the stomach (prone) while most human beings sleep on the back (prone). I created restme® to allow for comfortable side and stomach positioning during sleep for human beings and have studies the effect of the sleep position during the past 12 years .

On a normal mattress and pillow the force of gravity creates a continuous pressures on the shoulders on the side and stomach positioning is uncomfortable. These observations have lead to several important studies confirming the fact that most human being like many other mammals should avoid sleeping on the back. Stomach and side positioning have shown to reduce the risk for several medical conditions namely snoring, sleep apnea and the following cardiovascular conditions. Stomach positioning most probably prolongs the life expectancy thanks to improved alveolar recruitment in the lungs, which also has been confirmed in medical studies.

restme® allows for an even pressure division, avoiding extensive pressures on the shoulders on the side and a straight and relaxed position for the back and neck. In the stomach position there is free air passage and natural relaxation angles of 90º in the shoulders and the elbows. The viscoelastic material creates a mold of the body contour when exposed to body heat. Recent studies show that up to 20% of the population may suffer from snoring and airway collapse during sleep, called sleep apnea. Most of these individuals are left untreated. The current COVID-19 pandemic has created a tremendous need of stomach positioning, which has proven to increase the survival in patients with respiratory distress syndrome caused by the virus.

restme® has been presented at several important congresses among others in a Keynote Lecture in the World Congress of Ear, Nose and Throat in Paris in 2017, the European Ear, Nose and Throat Congress in Brussels and Somnoforum in 2019.
